Tarnlys is a full-colour LED feature light. Standing 45cm (about 18") high with a 5.5 x 6 inch base, it will add interest to any setting. Featuring 3 slider controls, you can adjust for any colour you wish. This item has the colour sliders to the left of the lightning tower.
Made from a solid block of hard maple wood, most machining operations are done on a CNC Router. All fitting and finishing is done by hand. The custom designed electronic control board is hidden in the base, only the sliders and the power jack are visible. The light is produced by an RGB (Red-Green-Blue) LED ribbon which is mounted inside a 2" acrylic cylinder. A matching hard maple cap finishes off the light.
At full brightness the Tarnlys is about as bright as a traditional 75W incandescent bulb, yet it only consumes about 12W.
I make the Tarnlys starting with a 2" slab of hard maple. The slab is planed to 1.75" thick by 6.5"" wide. Using a custom CNC program, I create a pocket at the bottom of each base to accommodate the electronics board. The CNC program then cuts the remaining pockets for the power socket and other components. The top is then cut with different tool bits, finishing with a perimeter cut to the final length and width. The electronics are a custom designed PWM (Pulse-Width-Modulation) circuit and power conditioner. Each slider controls one circuit, letting you determine the brightness of each of the Red-Green-Blue LEDs. The LEDs are on a ribbon which is wound around a dowel and enclosed by a 2" acrylic cylinder which diffuses the light.
The wood base and end cap are protected with 2 coats of urethane varnish. The acrylic cylinder has a matte finish, hiding fingerprints.
This Tarnlys lamp is the result of many years of experimentation and design refinement. Be the first in your family and circle of friends to proudly show this custom-made piece of functional art.
Please note: the colours shown in the photographs are close, but not exact. Photographing light sources is difficult! Tarnlys comes with a 12V UL and CSA certified wall wart for use in North America. The circuit board uses traditional solder, so is not ROHS compliant. The LEDs run on 12V, so are cool. This lamp should last long enough to become a family heirloom.
