"AWAITING ALEXANDER", Etching 5 inch x 7 inch
Birds in Greek mythology sometimes could speak. These talking birds, often sources of wisdom, could be deities in bird form or simply messengers of the Gods. Either way, their advice is generally sound, and humans ignore it at their peril. Birds warn of dangers ahead, reveal secrets, and guide heroes and travelers on their way.
According to legend, Alexander the Great traveled across the desert to the oracle of Amon-Ra at Siwa to receive the affirmation that he was the son of Zeus Ammon, destined to rule the world, and confirmed upon him his belief in his divine origin. He was lost but disaster was averted when two black ravens miraculously appeared bringing abundant rain, Alexander insisted his colleagues follow them as the gods must have sent them to guide them. The ravens limited their flight to accommodate the party, even cawing loudly if their charges deviated from the correct path.
Here are the two ravens waiting.
