• ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Chris Englund is a woodworker, boat builder and wood carver of Swedish descent, who currently lives in Florida. As he comes from a family of skilled craftsmen, grew up in a Swedish household and spent time in Sweden, he has been heavily influenced by Swedish folk art and wood carving techniques. Chris started carving simple toys and figures as a child and developed the hobby into a carefully honed skill over the years, having carved thousands of works of art and hundreds of Dala Horses, to date.
His portfolio includes the spectacularly detailed models of figureheads for a replica of a Swedish ship (the Kalmar Nyckel), canoes, “pirate chests”, birds, alligators, sea horses, scenic relief carvings, custom-made furniture and, of course, Dala Horses. He is famous among family and friends for his gifts of beautifully carved wooden spoons and cutting boards. Especially popular with his grandchildren are the lovingly crafted wooden toys (musical instruments, doll cradles, blocks, chairs, carts, tugboats, horses, alligators and other animals).
Chris has sold his works of art at craft fairs and green markets in Florida and on www.etsy.com/shop/XylemCrafts.
He is an award winning volunteer for his service over the years to Building Bridges to Youth and LAHIA (a homeless shelter and food bank).
♥ HISTORY: Originally, the traditional Dala horse was mainly a toy for children, but was also used as a form of currency. This stubby nosed little horse has become a token of goodwill and exemplifies Scandinavian frugality and dexterity and is recognized as an unofficial symbol of Sweden throughout Swedish-America.

We are happily passing on the tradition of our ancestors.
