These iconic creatures are actually quite lumpy and bumpy in texture, and so this pattern includes lots of binding off and picking up stitches with a large number of picots thrown in as well. For all that it can be knitted by an adventurous intermediate level knitter.
The sample is knitted with 30g Knit Picks Hawthorne Speckle Hand Paint fingering yarn 357 yds/ 100g, but you can use any yarn. This yarn gives a seahorse about 12” (30 cm) long. A thicker yarn will give a bigger seahorse and take more yarn. It’s easier to knit if there is some wool content in the yarn as it holds the shape better, but it’s not required.
Gauge is not important at all, as long as you use a needle size to give a tight weave, so that the stuffing does not show through. Gauge on the sample is 28 sts and 36 rows/4” (10 cm).
Techniques include picking up stitches, 3 needle bind off, picots, short rows, and a short length of Icord and mattress stitch. There is no sewing.
